Corsica

France

Many people believe Corsica to be the most beautiful Mediterranean island.  The ancient Greeks called this island Kalliste, which means 'the finest', and the French named it Ile de Beaute due to its beauty.  The island belonged to the Republic of Genova until the middle of the 18th century and became part of France after the Versailles treaty in 1768.  French soon became the island's official language, although many of the locals speak their own Corsu dialect nowadays, which is more Italian than French.  Corsica is a remarkable island in many ways.  Although it's quite small, measuring 85km by 180km, it boasts more than a hundred mountains up to 2000m high.  Monte Cino in the north west is 2707m high.  Renting a car is most probably the best way to explore Corsica but don't be misled by the distances.  The locals measure in time, not kilometres.  Another way to explore the isle is by the narrow gauge railway, which will take you on spectacular journeys through the inland area featuring scenic views of the ravines and charming bays.

TIPS:  The locals are very friendly.  You will be welcome to experience tradtional parties, farmer's markets and listen to folk songs in the evening.  Many of the markets sell local wine, cheese and honey.  Enjoy the chesnuts at the end of summer.  Try some traditional Corsican food such as ham, sausage or cheese.  The goats and sheep cheese Niolo and Broccio is delicious.

Typical Corsica

The Corsican capital is Ajaccio and is located on the west coast of the island.  It was discovered by the Romans, destroyed by the Saracens and Napoleon Bonaparte was born there on the 15 August 1769.  This is why the street of Cours Napoleon Bonaparte is so important.  There is also a statue of the emperor at the Place Giraud on his pedestal.  According to Napoleon he was born on a carpet designed around several Greek heroes with a comet in the horizon signifying his future glory.  His sisters said "He was a big dreamer in his childhood.  The comet was there for three weeks and we never had a carpet in our house".
