Switzerland Switzerland is not part of the European Union but is a federal republic with 26 states known as 'cantons'. The capital of Bern is the main location for federal authorities and is home to many global companies. Many years ago, people lived quite isolated lives high in the mountains and had no real contact with people in the next valley. This meant that the each valley created its own laws and traditions. This also resulted in all kinds of private initiatives being successful, many of which would never have succeeded in other European countries. For example, in addition to the official and larger trains, here there are many private train companies that use the same tracks. Companies include the panoramic Glacier Express, Bernina Express and Furka Bahn, all of which are very popular with tourists. The majority of Swiss people speak German but French and Italian are spoken in the west and southern areas. Another official language is Reto-Roman, which is spoken in the canton of Graubunden.

Typical SwitzerlandBetween all typical Swiss icons like the coo coo clock, the watch with 'Swiss made' and the (secret) bank account, the indestructible Victorinox pocket knife is worth mentioning. You'll see those knives all over the world, in all sizes and prices. Karl Elsener once designed them for the Swiss army (that is why the Swiss arms sign is on the knife) and when his mother Victoria died the knife got her name with the addition of -inox, which means rustproof steel. Extremely solid, multifunctional and very popular as a camping knife. Even spacemen used it on the moon.

Swiss cheese as an in between, in fondue or as a raclette dinner must be part of your holiday in Switzerland, as is a good mountain walk. You will never forget the view to the impressive Aletsch glacier. The Rhône river widens in the west to Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) with beaches and water sport. A train ride with the rack railway from Zermatt to Matterhorn mountain (the most famous Swiss mountain, 4478m) is a real experience to the whole family.
