Campsites in Plitvice
Plitvice Lakes (Plitvička jezera) is the oldest and most impressive national park in Croatia. Squeezed between the Mala Kapela Mountains to the west and the Lička Plješivica to the south-east. The area is of extraordinary natural beauty and has attracted nature lovers for decades. It’s Croatia’s first national park, established back in April 1949. Plitvice Lakes were awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in October 1979. The national park was expanded in 1997 and today occupies an area of just under 300 km2. Explore Plitvice and its stunning lakes
Plitvička Jezera National Park is open all year round and offers visitors seven routes around the lake complex, plus four mountain hiking trails. All visitors must follow local instructions and information signs. You must stick to the marked paths and avoid leaving any trace of your visit, such as leaving any rubbish etc. You can tour some of the park on dedicated electric boats and panoramic electric trains (ticket purchase required).
Discover spectacular Karst landscapes
Karst is a type of landscape where the dissolving of the bedrock has created sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, springs, and other characteristic features. The Plitvice Lakes National Park, located in the Dinaric Alps, is made up of this terrain. The region boasts some of the most impressive karst landscapes in the world. As a result of these hydrogeological features the lake system of the park is divided into Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes that formed over thousands of years. The area is spectacular and well worth a visit.
Explore local history and cultural heritage
Plitvice Lakes National Park and its surroundings have been inhabited since prehistoric times. These lands are rich in lakes, forests, flora and fauna. The many natural shelters and fertile soil made the area ideal for early human settlement. The area was also an important trading and communication route between Continental and Adriatic regions. Today you can still admire rare examples of rural architecture and local life at one of the many small villages that boarder Plitvice Lakes National Park.
