            Family Camping fun by a lake or river in the Alps

            The sea is a long way away, so when the temperature rises in the Alps, where do you cool off near the campsite? How about Lake Serre-Ponçon? One of the largest artificial lakes in western Europe with lovely beaches and lots of water sports facilities. Or perhaps the family friendly Lac d'Aiguebelette? It’s a great day out for the kids. Sailing enthusiasts head for Lake Chambon, which has its own sailing school near the village of Eguzon. The calm waters of Lac du Bourget are great for small children. It even has a kids playground. White water daredevils take to the river Guil, Durance or the Rhône for serious rafting, canoeing or kayaking. Wherever you’re camping in the Alps, when the heat’s on, there’s always a handy spot close to the campsite to cool off!

            City trips near your campsite in the Alps

            Lovers of art and culture head for Grenoble. This charming university city is the capital of the Alps and is famed for its food, picturesque old town, lively shopping and countless museums, such as the Archaeological Museum, Natural History Museum or National Centre of Contemporary Art. Foodies visit Lyon, France’s 3rd largest city and its gastronomical capital. Go to the Fourvière district to admire the ancient Roman amphitheatre, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and metallic tower of Fourvière. Gap is the largest town in the Hautes- Alps region. Walk around the pretty old town, stop for a delightful lunch, then find the L’Auberge Marchand, where Napoleon stayed after escaping from Elba. For a taste of how the old Dukes of Savoy lived, go to Chambery and visit the magnificent 13th century castle.

Visit the ancient Roman and medieval town of Embrun and admire the 12th century Notre-Dame-du-Réal cathedral. For the ultimate view, drive to Briançon, the highest town in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fancy a day by the water? Then go to Aix-les-Bains, a delightful thermal spa town on Lake Bourget. For a thrilling time for the kids, take them to Walibi Rhône-Alpes in Les Avenières. A fun filled day full of rollercoasters and water rides.
