How to describe the Austrian countryside in 3 words? Mountains.Woods.Lakes. When you go camping in Austria, you’ll always be in the middle of a delightful nature area. The southern part of Austria, Carinthia, has a lot of lakes. More than 1000 in fact! Pick one and relax in the sunshine, while your kids have fun in the crystal clear water. The most well known lakes are the Wörthersee and the Ossiachersee. The Maltschachersee is very popular with water sports lovers. The Steiermark region is more rural. Tour the vineyards and taste the local produce, such as juicy apples and pumpkin. The Tirol region is great for hiking, especially in the Kaiser mountains. Alternatively, take a refreshing dip in the amazingly clear waters of the huge Going swimming lake. Visit the world’s longest cave in Salzburg, the Lamprechts. It’s 35 kilometres long! This area is especially popular with families as it has endless kilometres of cycling paths. Vienna is also a big cycling city. Ride through the beautiful countryside, from the Donau river to the enormous parks. Or chill out the man made city beach Hermann. Very relaxing!
Discover the many cultural treasures
There’s a lot more to find near your campsite than just incredible countryside. This country is absolutely brimming with culture! Visit the historical city centre of Klagenfurt in Carinthia.Tip: go on an organized walk through the city. You can arrange this through the tourist office. You’ll stroll past cosy town squares, impressive statues and fabulous fountains. Klagenfurt also has some great museums, such as the Wappensaal im Landhaus and the Planetarium. A must see is Graz, capital of the Steiermark region. Graz has a gorgeous, historical city centre and is a UNESCO City of Design. Admire the quaint courtyards, peaceful town squares and the Eggenberg castle. When you stay at a campsite in the Tirol region you have to visit the medieval city of Innsbruck and the famous Ötzi village, from the early Neolithic period. Fans of the movie “The Sound of Music” head for Salzburg to visit the famous gardens of the Hellbrunn castle. Kids will love playing with the water fountains here. Last but not least, there’s Vienna with its wonderful Hofburg Palace, Hundertwasser House, MuseumsQuartier district, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Schönbrunn castle, made famous by Empress Sissi.

When you’ve seen all the cultural sights near your campsite, it’s time for another kind of delightful day out. One which the kids will also appreciate more. 3 tips for Carinthia: swim in or take a boat trip on the Wörthersee lake, go on exciting adventures in the Presseggersee Lake water park and in the summer you can enjoy the musical evening spectacle with fountain and light shows in Klangwelle Wörthersee’. 2 tips for Steiermark: enjoy the stunning view from the 3000 metre high Dachtstein mountain, known as the Salzkammergut. The cable trip there alone is a thrill in itself! And visit Styrassic Park, an amazing dinosaur park. Going camping in Tirol? Then Innsbruck and the Going lake are highly recommended. Going to Salzburg? Then the Lamprechtsgrot caves and the castle where they shot the movie “The sound of Music” should be on your list. Fancy a bike ride along the Donau river? Then head for Vienna.
